Urgent Help, need an OS

Alright so, I'm trying to get this typed fast. My friend has an old Dell lappy, he has lost the recovery CD and the 30 days have ran out. We tried installing Ubuntu before, but when it got to the username and pw login, after you typed anythign in and hit enter it would prompt you again. We can't afford to mess up again seens how he doesn't have that recovery CD anymore. Would someone be able to link me to a tut or video on how to properly do it? I remember when we were doing it there were a few things asking about the harddrive and such and we had to choose one, we probably chose the wrone one(s)

Or, anyone of you could not PM me a link to a legal torrent of any type of OS

The thing is, I can burn any .iso of linux I want, but when I install it is when it got mucked up. Like I said, when we were installing it, it asked quite a few questions about partitions and such with the hdd..

Yeah, Ubuntu is a great OS, just delete all the hard drive partitions...and then choose I believe it's...Use all free space or something...yeah Dapper is coming out soon
