So I've been having this problem with my usb malnfunctioning. I get this error bubble "one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned..." and nothing usb works. I'm on an Asus g50vt laptop, the laptop is on a cooler which is plugged into the usb and it spins fine. Also when i plug in my iphone, it charges but i still get the error bubble so i cannot connect to itunes. I thought it was a bad mouse so i changed it, still same problem.
Now here's whats really messed up, when i get the error i have to stop using my mouse, so I use my touch pad on the notebook instead and everything works fine aside from the usb, but when I reboot the computer, it hangs on the asus start up screen and windows does not load. The only solution I've found to get windows to boot after the usb error is to remove and reseat the ram.
Any help would be great thanks
oh and im on windows vista 64

Have you tried reinstalling the USB drivers or motherboard drivers for the machine? You can get them here.

If it's hanging at boot though, I wouldn't rule out faulty hardware. Is it still under warranty?

nah warranty was up a while ago.
Is there a way to test the ram for defects?
Ill try to reinstall the mobo drivers like you said.
thanks

Just about any Linux boot disc has memtest86+ on it. Download the distribution of your choice, burn it to a CD and boot the CD. On the main menu page you should see an option that says something along the lines of "test memory". Hit that and let it run several cycles.

If you get any failures, then you have a RAM issue. Make sure it isn't something stupid like an improperly installed RAM stick.

well it just happened again, i tried reseating the ram and it still hung at bootup so I dont think thats the problem. I did notice that the video card as extremely hot so I sprayed it with compressed air for a few minutes to cool it down and it booted fine after that.
COuld the usb issue be linked to the gfx card overheating?
Also what are my option if I have to replace the gfx card? Do I have to buy the same card or can I buy something different?

First thing you need to do is address the overheating issue: blow out those vents and make sure all the fans are working properly. Make sure your external cooler is helping and not hindering the process.

It looks like your graphics module is replaceable, so plug your model number into eBay and look for a compatible replacement module.

A decent search phrase in Google should help you determine which is the best module for you.

Yeah I dunno what it is. I just finished gaming and my card was going full speed for about 2 hrs so it's not overheating. I stop playing and unplug my iphone and i get the error again... The only thing that seems to fix the problem is shutting down the notebook and removing the power supply and battery for 30 seconds or so.
Is there a way to restart the usb driver or whatever powers the usb from within windows instead of shutting down everytime?

I think that you are suffering hardware problems and should consult specialist
