I have MacBook Pro, running Mavericks.
When I attempt to use a widget, (any of them) the page disappears and Safari comes up, with a URL (shows a lock) syndication.twitter.com.
I do not ever use twitter. I use Safari and Firefox.
I do not even know If I have a Widgets problem or a Safari one.
