Just installed Ubuntu 8

And it's pretty cool.

Here's what happened though.

I already had XP Pro installed on the C: drive. I installed the Linux Distro on my D: drive.

The install completed 100%, no problems at all. Although when my computer restarts it boots straight into XP Pro.

Now I was expecting the grub to offer me a choice of OS to boot into but there was none??? Well, it was there.

Eventually, after trying everything else, I decided to disconnect my C: drive, and then rebooted.

Guess what, I got the grub options screen and booted into Ubuntu and i'm looking forward to messing around with this.

So, a couple of things really.

I'm thinking I need to sort out the MBR, not the grub, cause it's there and the grub works. Anyone here got any ideas?

In the meantime I will continue to solve this problem.

EDIT:

Sorted out the dual boot issue. Aftre I disconnected the C: drive, as above, and reconnected it I now have the dual boot option.

I am glad that you were able to figure it all out. If I may ask, when you boot up and you get to grub, what booting options do you have? Besides Ubuntu do you have anything listed for windows or is that still missing?

If you have any problems, feel free to ask. I can answer just about any question you have, and since you are using Ubuntu the fix is generally quick and easy.

Grub gives me 5 options.

I get Ubuntu, Ubuntu Restore then Ubuntu, Ubuntu restore and finally Windows XP.

But I think this is due to the fact that I put the Ubuntu Grub in twice.

I think I need to remove one of the Ubuntu MBR's from Grub, ???, so I get just Ubuntu, Ubuntu restore and then Windows.

I need to go open terminal. Then I would like you to copy this into it and then copy and post the output.

cd /boot/grub [color=red]this is in the first line, then hit enter[/color]
nano menu.lst [color=red]this is on the next line which should read /boot/grub[/color]

I would like to see the entire thing. This will help me see what is going on with your grub menu.

The bold area above is the problem. I need to remove 2 of the grub menu options.

Open a terminal and type sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst. Enter your admin password and edit the list.

Problem solved!
