Default Not Working

I have a new computer and installed Office 2007. Word is all I use.
When I change the type font and use the default it doesn't work. It goes
back to what it was.
The default doesn't work on line spacings either.
I have removed and re-installed Office 3 times to no avail.
I also installed Office 2003 to use it. It did the same thing.
I removed it and re-installed Office 2007.
