Question about data logger power saving modes

I didn't know where to ask this. Maybe someone here will know.

I have a data logger thermometer that I can plug thermocouple probes into and record the temperature over time. The instructions are very poorly translated, and I'm confused about something.

This is what I have been able to gather so far: It has two energy-saving modes that you can choose between. The first mode puts the microcontroller (MCU) into sleep mode when it doesn't need to record. The second mode does the same thing, and also closes the peripheral drive circuit when it's not recording.

I don't really know what any of this means. My question is, why would you choose one mode over the other? If the second mode saves more battery life than the first one, why would you ever choose the first one?

Here is the instruction manual. Page 8 (page 11 of the pdf) talks about the power saving modes. Thank you for reading this.
