Australian Internet Censorship petition

...and could ban controversial websites on euthanasia or anorexia

Why Ban websites on euthanasia or anorexia, those aren't major problems...and people don't visit websites regarding those topics daily, and if someone does...its by their own choice. What they should be censoring over the internet is child pornography....its really sad to hear in the news about such crimes.

It won't stop pedos for several reasons, they will still be able to swap shit via torrents, email, P2P etc, the only ones who will be penalised are the average users as the model the government propose using has a high "false positive" rate and will inadvertently block normal sites.

The scary part is the whole black list/ grey list part, the grey list is everything illegal and immoral (pron) which you can opt out of to the black list which is everything illegal (supposedly), the "who decides what is immoral" thing is open to massive abuse. It's censorship pure and simple.

This will make the "Great Internet Wall of China" look tame in comparison.

The whole IT sector (apart from those with a vested interest) is saying the same thing but typical of most governments this one won't hear anything except what it wants to hear.

@OP, online petitions are a waste of time, same with emails, you need to write a letter to your local/federal MP, at least that way you will know they read it (or rather some minnion in their employ will read it)

There have been several rallies to protest it in different cities as well.

that is very true, couldn't agree more

There is an official Paper petition that can be downloaded, printed, signed and sent in the postal mail, the petition has been running for almost 2 weeks, 8,000 signatures have been collected, 20,000 is the goal as the legislation was originally passed from a petition asking for the internet to be censored by 20,000 mis-informed religious activists.

The cut off date is 15th December, all support is needed to ensure we do this, people do not want this, but the problem is there is a huge media blackout so people have no idea, and what they have heard has been favourable because it has been fabricated by the 'child porn line'

This legislation can be refuted, in combination with other tools, we can make our voices heard, it is easier for them to ignore thin air than loads of letters, protests in each city with permits, a paper petition and getting signatures, fact sheets, networking, any media attention, local newspapers and radio stations have a decent hit rate, fact sheets, links to information, and anyting else that will raise awareness and support for this very important infringement on our human rights.
