Which programming language would you all recommend to someone who asked you what language they should learn first? I don't know enough of a variety of them, but am aware of the history of c, c++ etc. Should C# be the first one a new programmer should try or how about the easier visual basic. Are there any other good ones to start with?

If you understand the concepts of programming you could go with C++.

If all you know is history. I would start out with something like Python. It's a very good introductory language (and is actually quite powerful when you get deep into it) and it will lead quite nicely into C++. Before you get going on .Net and web applications using languages like C# I would recommend learning the basics with a more basic language.
