Problem connecting to internet

I recently just had an HP Pavilion 9680C given to me. Its got a P3 and about a 38Gb HDD and window 98. I was trying to connect to the internet with it today to the exact same jack im using right now, and it wouldn't work. I ran the same cord i used for another computer (which connect to the net perfectly fine) over here to this room (different room than where actual PC is) and plugged it in. I opened up IE and it couldn't find the page.

Any suggestions??

is it ethernet?
are the drivers installed?
same for if its usb or anything

Yeah I'm pretty sure its ethernet (it says 10/100 next to it).

And yeah the drivers must be installed because the previous owner said they used it on the internet...

Humm that's weird. Have you got a copy of Windows XP. I'd swap that out first of all. Then actually use it.

Yeah actually i have a copy of windows xp pro laying around because i was just putting it on my uncles computer...I just don't know of this computer is too old to run xp.
