hi all,

my WIFI is garbage and i wanted to run cat5 all over my house but it's too big of a job and the cable will need to run underneath the house, so i was thinking about powerline install. is it any good? i have read a few reviews but nothing "real world" i am looking at the western digital starter kit.

When you say power line are you talking about the gizmos that use your household electricity to transfer data?

I've used them before, not that bad actually!

Reliability was good, not great for transferring large files over your network but you get a good 11mb or so a second (or I did 3 years ago) i'm sure it's got faster since then and considering my connection at the time was 2mb it's plenty.

I've not used them myself, but friends who have used the more modern varieties have reported good things. Just be aware that they need to be on the same ring to work properly.

FWIW, the old ones (a few years or so ago) used to suck like anything. Slow, expensive, and dropped more packets than a postman with no hands.
