What I would like to do is add my friends computer to my network so I can access his shared folders.
I know how to do this if they're in my LAN through my router, but would this be possible if he isn't? If it is, how?

you mean like access his shared folders from far away (you live ages away from him)?

Port foward the right ports to your PC, than he can type your IP in and see your files

However, I dont recomend this without stirct ACL's
