Help With basic networking

hey guys
ok i have two computers next to each other ones a laptop
i changed the workgroup name on both of them and it works after i restart them but the next day when i go back on them it doesn't work anymore
can anyone help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

a cross over cable I'm assuming and not connected to the internet? Also, I've read something about this, I'll see what I can dig up but said something that you have to change a setting to "use connection (orwhatever) on start up"

Can you be more specific? Cable such as TitanMATRIX describes, or parallel cable, or serial cable?
