Connecting to network through wire problem

Hey guys,

I'm sort of a noob anyway, I'm trying to help my friend with some stuff on his computer. He has his laptop at my house but he can't connect to my internet (my Wifi is disabled)

The computer is plugged in, through a wire (cat 5) that I know works yet he's got no connection to the network. The wire works fine in my computer, he says at his house, when he connects to his it works. It says there are no network connections available.

I feel like it's something to have to do with his anti virus maybe it doesn't trust my network?

I have a router hooked up to the wall, with a cord running into an 8-port switch with both of our computers and my Xbox all hooked up to it. My computer works fine as does my Xbox but for some reason he can't connect.

I think it's probably something really simple, I'm just a bit of an amateur so I'm not sure what basic things I should be looking for. Can anyone give me a hand?
