Error 55

Hi everyone,

Today we tried to open a program that we've been opening and using for quite some time. We use it to compile our family history.

But today instead of it opening, we were confronted by a text box that said:

Error opening user file C: [ pathname ]
Error 55: File already open.

Clearly, the program is not open.

Can a wise Computerforums person help us solve this please?

Regards to all,

Kevin.

Hi Biker,

Yes, I've re-started several times, even switching the electricity off at the wall plug and waiting a while before re-starting.

I still get the Error 55 message.

Regards,

Kevin

Are you sure the program isn't already open, running in the background or something like that? Check the System Tray to see if perhaps the program has been set to launch at boot time and is available in the System Tray.

Thank you for your reply, Strollin.

I've checked the System Tray. There's only the usual stuff in there: One Note, Set Up OneDrive and the like.

But I'm interested in your comment '- - -see if the program has been set to launch at boot time.'

How do you do this?

Regards,

Kevin.

If you have windows 10 or 8, just press control + shift + esc to launch task manager.
In the tast manager go to the startup tap. (if you don't see any taps, click the arrow below that says "more details")

If windows 7.
type "msconfig" in the start menu and go to the startup tab.

Thanks for your reply,Biker.

Following your clear instructions, I opened Task Manager.

I clicked on each of the Tabs: Processes, Performances, Startup and so on.

But the program that won't open because of Error 55 isn't shown.

Should I be looking for that program or something else?

Regards,

KevinB

Hi Biker,

The program causing us grief is Legacy7.5. Its author appears to be Millenium.

We use the program to compile our families' histories.

Our not being able to open Legacy is inconvenient.

We have been trained in operating MS programs, Word, Excel etc but we know almost nothing about how computers work.

Thanks for taking the time.

Regards,

KevinB
