x86 vs. x64

whats the difference. is x64 more optimised for 64-bit cpu's?
i don't really see a difference. i'm using vista rc1 x64 and xp mce.
 
actulay its x86-64 to most people, 64 is actulay a add on you could say for the x86, and if you didnt have a x86-64 CPU (like AMD64 or EM64T) you wouldnt be able to run any 64 bit operating systems
