I have a computer that the usb ports don't work. i can plug a cell phone or mp3 player in and it will charge but when i plug a mouse in or want to transfer data it says usb device not recognised

Go to Device Manager and see if there is something wrong with the USB port.

Try re-installing the chipset drivers. See if that cures it.

its a gateway gt5220. i already tried reinstalling all the drivers, reinstall sp3 and updates, unplugged system, uninstalled usb ports and hubs.

Now when the computer starts up i the monitor gets a signal but then after like 5 minutes it doesn't detect the system.

Does that sound like the mother board(on capacitor on the motherboard is starting to bulge up) is there any way to test the motherboard
