Upgrading RAM

I ran a computer scan at http://www.crucial.com/ and as I already know, my computer's memory is in bad shape. I currently have 256mb, and two available slots. The scan said that my computer can hold no more than 512mb per slot, so my maximum capacity is 1024mb. Why can't I put in 1gb memory chips in my computer instead of the 512mb?

It might not recognize the memory in your motherboard.
Stay with the 512.
