trouble with shutting down my computer???

I just built a computer. and it has:

and 1gb of ram. not sure of the brand.

dvd burner... not sure of the brand

and.. when shutting down it takes about 30 minutes. I dont understand why. Dont think it should do that. i am pretty new to building computers, and i cant figure out why it is doing this. Also when i get into some internet programs like JAVA. my computer locks up. ANy body help??

check your running processes before shutting down, maybe there is something in particular that is holding it up..

check the ones that are still running after you start the shutdown process, and list them here in the forums.

You can try these steps.. I hope they help:

1. Disconnect any external devices except the mouse/keyboard/display. Then restart and try to shutdown. If it works, check with one of the devices' drivers.
2. There could be few services which can cause this problem. Launch 'msconfig' from Start->Run. Go to Services Tab and disable any unknown/not required ones. Repeat for Startup Tab.
3. Finally check the registry setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WaitToKillServiceTimeout. Ideally it should not be more than 20000(20 Seconds).

Usually these steps should take care of this issue.

I think i got it. I went into msconfig, and i turned somethings off that were unkowns. and it shuts down fine now. thanks! If i have anymore questions i will sure post here. GREAT site. Thanks guys

hey..... so like when i go into msconfig. and i take off that the unknowns, it goes into like selective startup. Should i just leave it in that. or just go back to normal.

I put it back on normal. I didnt take anything off from msnconfig. But when I get onto internet sites, my computer is locking up, or just extremly slow. I try to open certain prgrams and it wont open them, then i try to open it again and it says its already opened. I have only one game on my computer. I just built this computer like a week ago!! my computer should be working smoothly. but its absolutly horrible!. My laptop is running alot better then this! I cant dl anything, becuase it locks up. i havent got any programs on this. I have norton antivirus 2005. um..... and it still takes forever to shut down!!!!!!!!!!! I am very frusturated and i have no idea what to do! It just doesnt seem to be running smooth at all! please help!

Don't set it back to normal startup because that enables all start up items listed under msconfig. So if you go back into msconfig you will probably see that all those programs you unchecked are now checked again. Just uncheck the ones you don't want to start up, hit apply, then restart your computer. No need to do anything else.
