Where in XP Pro can you configure the desktop icons to be transparent instead of the colord box around the text?
 
That is for pre-XP versions of windows. I am pretty sure that you can enable it somewhere in windows, knowing that I used to have it before I started using a perticular style.
 
Try this. Right click your desktop, choose "Properties", under the "Desktop" tab click the "Customize Desktop" button, under the Web tab uncheck "Lock desktop items", click OK.

That didn't work for me, how about downloading TweakUI. If you have TweakUI installed open TweakUI, click on Explorer and scroll down to "Lock Web content" and uncheck it, click Apply/OK. Note that after applying the suggestions recommended which should work you may have to restart your computer.

Just set it to the color identical (closely matching) your background.
 
eh...I will pass on TweakUI. I don't like the idea of a 3rd party app changing important files.
