OKAY heres the deal.....

My sound has been completely screwed up for the last few months and its really getting me mad now..

I want to know 1 thing first.. then we will talk about what happened.

Question: Is it possible that the sound unit on the motherboard is completely wrecked? (I mean so the sound will not work whatsoever with or without a sound card)

... what happened was I had a Soundblaster Live card, and my sound mysteriously stopped working one day. I go to Control Panel > Sound, Speech, and audio devices, and i see that the box to select my sound device is un-clickable. (My computer is detecting absolutely no sound device)

so i think

1... maybe it's a driver issue.

I uninstall/reinstall drivers, try in safe mode, try out of safe mode, nothing is working

2... Maybe it's the card.

I take the card out, i put it back in.. no sound, same issue.... SO i figure the sound card went bad.. and I switch it with a different sound card that was working in another computer... This sound card had the exact same problem.. not being detected at all, no matter what drivers i had.

I even tried a third , working, sound card.. and it had the same problem..

So again.. my question: Is it possible that the sound unit on the motherboard is completely wrecked? (I mean so the sound will not work whatsoever with or without a sound card)

Did you try switching PCI slots? Sometimes, PCI slots on motherboards can go bad without rhyme or reason.

To Jamxx: i have an mATX case and motherboard, as you probably know its hard to do anything in those.. my video card with its cooling unit takes up all of the slots but 1. This is where i have to put my sound card.

To Kchi55: My motherboard has absolutely no intergrated audio... It says something in the BIOS but it has no plugs on the computer for sound.

bump

srry i really need some sort of a theory about what is goin on... this problem has been bothering me for way too long

Well, if you have something else you can put in that PCI slot besides a sound card, that'd be your best option. See if it will detect something else.
