replacing motherboard

I have a motherboard from a newer Gateway my current one is a 97 Gateway the model # is GW2K-Hampton and i want to put a newer motherboard in it from a newer computer the model # on the newer computer is LP MINI TOWER TBR E-4200 500 what i want to know is can i just plug the mother board in and all the connections and will the hard drive be ok with it and work with the new motherboard without and updates to the hard drive

You really can't just drop in a new motherboard and and have it boot right up because of differences in hardware, addresses, IRQs, drivers, etc. If the new motherboard has the same exact chipset and options, then it should be a slam dunk and your system should fire right up first time. But, more than likely there will be differences and the OS is going to pitch a fit and not boot. If you have XP there is a tutorial that shows the steps needed to prepare the OS before the transfer.

Is there a reason for swapping the motherboards?

You're going to install XP on the drive after installing the new motherboard. . .
