Recording off soundcard.

I was once able to record off the soundcard using Start>Accessories>Entertainment>Sound Recorder while messing around with the settings there and the Audio/Sound Devices control panel... but I lost the ability. How can I set it up to regain that ability?

go into the sounds and audio panel
select the audio tab
select your sound card/headset for sound recording
select volume
select your microphone checkbox
hit okay

I'm not trying to record from my mic, but my soundcard.
