What is the going speed of RAM nowadays for a desktop? Also, what type of RAM do I have? The RAM chipset has three sections at the part where it would connect to the motherboard.

Sounds like DIMM PC100, I don't know any other types or RAM that have 3 sections. If it's PC100, you may want to update your system...

Actually most people still have DDR2 800, but it's going into DDR3, so if you want a new system you might as well get DDR3.

The best price/performance RAM available ATM is DDR2 800MHz from either Corsair or Crucial. DDR3 isn't going to surpass the fastest DDR2 memory until the timings are lowered.
