hi, right now i have 8GBs of ram (4x2gb). I want to upgrade to 16GBs (2x8gb).

since the 16GBs of ram is 2x8gb i want to know if i will be able to use 2 of my old ram sticks and plug those in next to the 16GBs to get even more ram. Im not sure if it will mess up my computer or anything, so please help me.

my motherboard: Asus P7P55 LX

One more question. would it be a good idea to get 2x8gb or should i try to find a 4x4gb?

2x 8gb with 2x 2Gb will not work, simply because your mother board can only support up to 16GB RAM across your 4x DIMM.

4x 4Gb's will work fine - but personally go for the 2x 8Gb's and put them in Dual Channel.

What ever you do get RAM modules are identical for best performance!

I wouldn't upgrade to that at all, unless you're benchmarking, or running a server; you'll get very little, if ANYTHING, out of games at 16GB, although it will look nice on paper.

Regardless...

"4x 4Gb's will work fine - but personally go for the 2x 8Gb's and put them in Dual Channel." - I second this.

And as Jake said, make sure the modules are identical (same size, speed, and probably brand) to properly utilise dual mode.
