RAID Cards

so that everyone understands the quesitons i have to explain alot so please read carefully
Dell 2400
2.8 GHz Unicore CPU
80 GB HDD IDE
CD Rom
3 PCI Bus

what i want to do to it:
OC the CPU to 3 GHz or 3.2GHz
Add a better heatsink fan
they have it ducted so all i have to do is change an 80mm fan in the back of the case to have a CFM of 84.1
add a small PCI vid card to reduce the cycles on the CPU
hopefully find a 500W PSU or something simular

okay ive been looking into a nice pc project
it involves Ubuntu and an old Dell 2400
so the ultimate goal would be to make a blu-ray video server for the home
streaming it to anywhere in the house
now this Dell 2400 belongs in the stone age
and it has 3 PCI slots
and i have alot of questions about RAID cards
i found this one
Click Me
that i like
it has 4 SATA II ports and a PCI bus
so its perfect for this project
the questions
1: it will add the 4 HDDs that i attach and format them right?
2: the information goes through the card, and not any SATA cables that attach to the Mobo right?
3: Can this added space be labled and partioned off from the main HDD and used as internal network storage?
4: will there be a performance loss on the SATA II HDDs by using a RAID card?
i might have more questions later

sorry if i missed something. But i was under the impression Dell= impossible to OC

Yeah, that's the first thing that stood out in my mind. I HAVE a Dell 2400 (POS, until I rebuilt it with a new MB and CPU) and the old socket 478 P4 (I had the 2.8Ghz also) and Dell board combo WILL NOT (I REPEAT, WILL NOT) overclock. There aren't any options even close to it in BIOS. So, without a new motherboard, you will not be able to OC. The money you are going to spend on a RAID card could be better spent on a new system, IMHO.

Also, nevermind's suggestion is risky, just so you know.

my mobo has a FOXXCONN logo sticker on it
along with model number and ect
be back in a few gonna do some research

Run CPU-Z on your computer and tell us exactly what the model number is. If if it's a stock computer, it should be a Dell board, but maybe there are different models of 2400's...but from what I saw on google when I was working on mine, there are all the same base-spec wise.

If you get a RAID controller then there will be a loss in performance. Raid controllers rely on the CPU to manage the hard drives, which can result in a loss of performance. Actual hardware RAID cards are expensive though.

well i couldnt find jack
ill post a pic of it tomorrow
okay make that ill run CPU-Z tomorrow
till then im sleeping
darn part-time seasonal job is killing me

but there would be a performance loss of the SATA II HDDs?
even as NAS?

k
i used CPU-Z and awww crap
awcrap.jpg

a new mobo for sure
if i can find one
i really like that program
thats awesome!!!
even though there is a foxxconn logo on it
i still need a new one
and i got this POS back in 04
so i want my paycheck!!! :(
