Quick CPU cooling question

Ok, tonight I'm ordering vista, a jumpdrive, and maybe a CPU fan, I have a question about the fan.
I have a core 2 duo right now, and I have it OC'd too 1.97ghz from 1.86. It is running at around 38 C. Should I get a heatsink for aroun $15 like one of the two listed below? Or keep it stock? Pnce I got problems when OCing with teh mobo I have, which is the last link below. Like windows will randomly freeze when I oc it past like 2 ghz.

or considering my pc in specs would a different upgrade be better? Around $60 at most. I thought maybe a better power supply as mine is just the one that cam with the case, lol.
 
Will, it really be worth it tho? Cause I dont know how stable it will run when OC'd more. Or will it run more stable when cooler?

How many watts is it? And what are you temps with the stock cooling, you may be able to go farther by increasing the voltage.

Anandtech got the E6300 to almost 2.6 GHz (past E6600 speeds)

With aftermarket cooling you will be able to probably get to almost 3 GHz, probably around 2.8 would be good. The X6800 (costs almost $1k) is clocked at I think 2.93 GHz, so that would be damn fast.
 
Yeah but I dont think my mobo would allow nearly that much OCing. The only way for me too OC is by turning up the Bus speed, I think its at 1130 now. I dont know if thats a normal way to OC or not. Also, my voltage is set to auto. Currently at 1.97ghz my stock temp is 38 C. At least when I had run it for a while, than restarted it and checked in the Bios.
My power supply is 500W.
 
Also do I need thermal paste with this as well? And how can I test for stability? 3DMARK?
 
You have to run 2 Prime95's at the same time, so both cores are under a load. Just install the program twice to different locations.
 
I'd personally get the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 which is an Intel cooler, and a very good one at that.
Its brother is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 PRO for AMD chips.

Its definitely worth checking out, and you'd be able to overclock a lot with it too.

Quiet, and cheap. Very effective.
