what exactly is a quad core processor vs dual core? i know its a vague question but do i really benefit alot more with a quad? Thanks

A quad core has four core, a dual core has two....

The quad core will have four threads at its clock speed, versus only two with a dual so it can handle *almost* twice as much as an equivalent dual core version.

unless it has hyper threading. Then each core has two threads.

quite simple really.

The core on a CPU is what does the work. Quad core CPU's have 4 operating cores and Dual core CPU's have 2 operating cores.

Multi-threaded applications will benefit from multiple core CPU's as they allocate processing 'threads' across the different cores. Single threaded applications won't benefit.

A Quad core has four cores. They can all operate one thread per core, totaling to four. A Dual core has two cores that can do two things at once.

Hyper threading is a technology that was used for single cores, that they could handle two threads at once, but it had the feeling as it if had two cores, but yet it's one core. Think Hyper-threading as a women...they can do two things at once, while men can do one.

New Quad cores now hasthe feeling of 8, but the HT technology can have each core do two things at once, totalling to 8.
