I'm thinking about upgrading my computer to a Intel quad core but cant decide on which to get. The Q6600 and Q8200 are both $189 on newegg. Ive read up on them and the jist of what Ive found is the Q8200 is quieter and cooler with a smaller cache but has almost no performance difference unless your planning on over clocking (which i doubt ill do).

Which CPU would you pick and why without factoring in OCing, or is there another better CPU in the same relative price range that has a performance difference worth mentioning?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

The Q8200 has a lower clock speed and a smaller cache compared to the Q6600, unless you're really worried about those ~30W, the Q6600 is the obvious choice.

Not if you are a hardcore gamer, at least at the moment. There aren't really any games out that use more than two cores, except maybe Crysis?

one of the most popular CPU's in the $200 range is the E8500... for good reason too :)

But if you want a quad and thats your budget, the Q6600 is the way

A quad is future proofing you. Simple as that.

For the same price, why go for a quad with less power? :p

tbh id wait a little bit longer at this point and buy the new cpus on the way out very soon
