Processor Upgrade

Can I upgrade the processor on my HP Envy dv7-7240us? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

This depends on how the motherboard is built. Your best bet is to consult HP. But keep in mind that even if it is possible, and you want to keep all other components, you cannot put a processor of a different generation, socket and class; i.e. it has to be a 3rd gen. mobile i5 of the same package size.

From what I can gather, the i5-3210m (CPU in that model) is socket G2, and therefore removable. (Just guessing this from a quick google of socket G2). You would probably only be able to upgrade to a chip that that model line was sold with, or that HP specifically say is supported by the motherboard. Not too sure whether you'd need a BIOS update to do this to be honest as I've never done it with that model.

The i5-3210M isn't a terrible chip though, why do you need to upgrade it?

And even if the CPU can be removed you will have to be careful so as to not put something back in the laptop that the cooler cannot handle.
