Power supply question

I've been looking for a power supply in the 500-600W range. I know what brands to look for, but other than that, I'm lost.
What are the differences between modular and non modular PSUs?
Is it better to have more 12V rails?
Any help in these matters / shove in the direction of old posts explaining these things would be greatly appreciated.

modular means that the plugs can unhook from the psu..which is good for power cable management...

you can remove cables you arent using..

and the more rails the better.

A modular power supply has separate cables that plug into the power supply, That way you only use what you need for better cable management. There is no difference in power and performance between the two.

The amount of 12V rails isn't as important as the overall available amperage. Some prefer one large 12V rail, other like multiple rails as it helps to insure that the power is spread evenly among the peripherals.
