Is this possible?

I have a laptop running vista and a desktop in the basement running xp. Can I link the laptop to the desktop to where I can access it's folders and other things? I have a wireless router if you needed to know that. I do not have a mind for computers so please go slow if you can explain to me how to do this if this is possible. Thanks
