Please help - Major Direct X Problem

So basically i bought a new game the other day, Sid Meier's Pirates! The problem is i cant get it open, i try and run the game and it just comes up with a Windows error report screen. I have snooped around and updated all my drivers and what not, but i have noticed one problem.

The game requires and also comes with Direct X 9.0c. I have installed 9.0c, and it says after the install it is ready for use. But when i run the DXDIAG to check on my system status, it says that i am only running 9.0b. I had a suggestion that it was my WinXP SP2, so i re-installed the SP2, then tried installing 9.0c again with no success.

I have tried not only installing 9.0c from the cd, but from the official windows direct x website, and also a third party website that supplied the full install file.

I am running an AMD64 3200+, with 1gig ram, 200gb sata hdd, Raedon ATI 9600XT 256mb, and WINXP SP2. I have easily got the game requirements, so i am convinced it is the dx problem causing the game not to run.

Are there any suggestions on how i could get Direct X 9.0c working, because i am completely stumped. If needed i can post the DXDIAG into the thread if anybody wants to have a look.

EEEK! That is alot of parameters. I never used DirectX parameters before, boring and a waste of time. OpenGL is WAY BETTER! Sry, I don't see anything wrong though. I know about parameters and DirectX readouts, and there seems to be nothing wrong at all. What I would do is reinstall it (9.1) and see if it runs better. Also, make sure if you have SP2, that it is not interfering with DirectX (mine did that when I put on SP2) SP2 blows!!

the problem is i was told you can't install older versions of dx over newer versions. If that was so i could have fixed it when i first had the problem.

How do i work out whether sp2 is interferring with DX, and if it is how do i stop it?
