Obtaining domain name and hosting . . . pitfalls?

I'd like to obtain a domain name and then host a website but there are so many options I'm not sure what to look out for. I'm sure there are some pitfalls I should avoid.

This will just be a personal website.

Who are the trusted players in this game?

If I wanted to eventually get one for a business what other things should I look out for?

www.godaddy.com is one of the higest ranked sites to get a domain. Not too sure about hosting, godaddy does offer it I believe..
