I'm dedicating myself to building a computer this christmas and i've come up with this: (Remember, it's not a gaming computer. It's just for surfing the web and old video game emulators. So don't go suggesting gaming stuff.) HD and optical already taken care of.

I think you'd be better off going with parts off eBay to get processors that aren't produced anymore. Something like a Pentium D would probably be pretty cheap on eBay.

Eeehh... I'd really rather get my components from somewhere I know is reputable and trustworthy. This is going to be my only computer, and I want to get something that I know won't take a dump on me after I've used it for a day. And besides, with newegg I'm getting free shipping.

If you can, I would shell out the $50 for a dual-core, but it's not necessary on a general-use computer. It would just make it a little more zippy.

Alright, I spent $350 on my dad's computer that is only used for internet browsing etc. I bough the monitor for $50 off a friend so if you don't need a monitor, I'm sure it's quite possible to build one for about $250.

My dad's computer's spec's are nothing to smile about, but it runs! -
Pentium Dual Core E2140 at 1.6Ghz - Barebone kit - $110
1Gb DDR2 667Mhz RAM - Barebone kit
Some cheap Gigabyte Motherboard - Barebone kit
A 160Gb Hard Drive - $50 (Least expensive HDD MicroCenter Had)
Used an old DVD Drive
OEM Version of Vista Premium - $100
Powerspec case with Free Generic PSU (300 or 350watt - forgot what brand) - $40
Heatsink for OEM CPU - $10

Overall, the laptop my mom brought for my grandma for Christmas for $500 is slightly better. It was a great deal and I got all my parts from MicroCenter (They have good combo deals).

Also, your list is forgetting a Operating System. Do you need one or do you have one around the house? That would add about another $50 to the list at least.

Actually, cabbs, I was just now looking at that processor, and I'll probably use that one instead. Way faster for only like five or six bucks more, and I can get a few extra dollars, so thanks!

I've already got a copy of Vista that'll run on this machine, so I don't need a new one. And the shopping cart on newegg totals up to $150 bucks flat with tax already included and free shipping on everything. But if I get that faster Athlon cabbs showed me, It'll be about $156.
