1280x1024 has more pixels so its technically more taxing on the GPU, but not by much. Youll be lucky to see a 2 or 3 FPS difference between widescreen 19" and standard

You do know the pixels are controlled by the monitor internally. The card sends the instructions to build the image on the screen, the controller in the monitor does the rest.
