MoBo socket

Hey everyone I am new to the forum because I am planning on breaking lose of the chains of my currently stock rig.
I wanted to upgrade my motherboard because currently I am using a BTX style instead of ATX so I cant even change out my dell XPS 420 case for something...well not crappy.
My question is in regard to socket type. After running a little program it says that my intel core 2 is a 775 LGA. This would mean that I would have to buy a motherboard that fits the 775 socket correct? or could that chip be used in a LGA 1366/socket B. It seems that most 775 socket motherboards are lacking power so that would be a question of concern.
I also know that my sound processor is built in from SigmaTel, If i get a new motherboard of equal or higher quality would I have to buy a sound card to keep the high quality or do most higher end MoBo's have good build in sound?
I know for many of you this question might sound stupid but I am new to the computer building so any help is appreciated.

My full specs just for reference is-
Windows 7- 64 bit
Dell motherboard make- 0TP406
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 socket 775 LGA
3gigs DDR2- Dual.
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX
Sound is from a built in SigmaTel High Def Audio
500g hard drive

yes you could use a 775 socket mobo
thats what your CPU is based on
so anything thats on newegg.com that is a 775 socket with a FSB of 1333
like these (click me)

as for the case
since your getting a new mobo
which ive only selected the ATX form factor
you can get any case that can support that size
like those (clicky again)
then youd be set for a new looking machine :D
enjoy

Many thanks for the links. So basically if i wanted a motherboard like below in the link- I would have to also upgrade to the i5 or i7 chip. That would set me back a little bit to get the money but would be more worth it overall to get something thats going to last me longer technology wise

that board gets me excited
but yes you would
if your going that route i would wait till mid of 2010 for the Gulftown i9 CPU on the 1366 socket
its a hex-core with hyper-threading
so if you do alot of video coding or other tasks that are multi-thread supported
it would be worth it for you to get that CPU :D

Dang I might just have to wait for that then, sounds amazing. Because I would hate to upgrade a mobo and then spend even more to upgrade again for a new chip set.

Thanks for all the information everyone, extremely helpful.

you would only have to upgrade the CPU with that Mobo
it will use the same chipset as the board (X58, intels latest flagship)
get the board and see how long you can wait for Gulftown to come out
here is some info on it
