er......... i forgot what i was gonna ask :):):)

( sorry my warped sense of humour)

Ok here goes

my old hp 7600 cmt takes pc 5300 and 4200 memory i got 2x 1gb 5300 ..........plus 2x512mb of 4200

would i be better removing the 512 sticks and putting 1gb of 5300 total as before 3gb

i think i`m right in saying i wont read 4 gb (if i go 4x1gb)

oh btw i got a 500gb hdd split between xp and win8 and a 80gb hdd which i`m gonna load linux mint mate lts on (hopefully)

Cheers Tony

It comes with XP installed and as dated as that system is it's 32bit. That means it'll only use 3.5gigs tops.
I would remove the 512 and replace it with a 1gig pc5300 card. Going with 5300 is prudent because in a mixed state like you have, 5300 and 4200, the memory management will slow down to the slowest memory card's speed. Keep them all the same.

Oh BTW here's the specs on that thing > http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12253_div/12253_div.HTML#Configurable Components - Select Models (localized by Regions)

the problem by having a slower set of ram on your system is that all the RAM modules will run at the speed of the slowest.
so they are all running at 533mhz instead of 2 of them running at 667mhz. i'll take those old crappy RAM modules out.
it should read 4 GB if you have a 64bit OS.
