I have a hp dv6000 laptop which came with 1Gig 512MB 2Rx16 PC2-5300S-555-12-A3 I want to upgrade to 2GB. Which kind of ram can I replace it with? 5400? or does it have to be 5300.

please help.

You need to first determine what speed memory that laptop will support. If the maximum is PC2-5300 then that's what you'll need to get.

A good start would be to go to Crucial Memory and use their System Scanner that will scan your system and tell you exactly what memory is compatible with your laptop.

thanks for that scanner!

this is what it came up with

* Maximum Memory Capacity: 2097152 MB
* Currently Installed Memory: 1024 MB
* Available Memory Slots: N.A.
* Number of Banks: 2
* Dual Channel Support: N.A.
* CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
* CPU Family: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5300 @ 1.73GHz Model 15, Stepping 2
* CPU Speed: 1733 MHz

The fastest memory the dv6000t/z will support is DDR2 667. I'd recommend going to www.kingston.com selecting your make(HP/Compaq), then model(Pavilion Notebook), then your laptops model number(dv6000t or z which ever it is), and buying 2 1GB modules.

^Yea if you need the extra space get it.
PC2 5300/5400 doesn't refer to the size of the memory it refers to the speed.

edit:
