Long blinking dash at startup

This computer is old but i use it for lots of stuff, p4 1.4ghz 386mb of ram and i noticed at start up after it shows the gateway symbol it shows a black screen with a dash that keeps blinkin and IT BLINKS FOR A LONG TIME! it never did this before and it seems like it gets longer everytime i start it up.It was manufactured in 01

Many older computers take longer to boot, and it could be a number of things going on with it. For instance, it could be the CMOS battery, or it could be a deffective piece of hardware that hasn't showed itself yet. It may be as simple as a BIOS flash. If you installed any new hardware/software lately, that could be the problem. Many factors, to different solutions. I do think it's related to BIOS- I would change out the battery, and see what that does...
