my dads got a desktop but he sick of his big old crt
and my laptops got a vga plug is he just pluged it in
is there a way to set it where it uses the laptops screen?

my laptop has a vga plug too - but on mine its only an output not an input - i.e. it can only send images to a screen and not receive images.

the vga connector on mine is a female connector i.e. no pins just holes - which means its only and output - if yours has pins then its an input.

doesnt make a difference. same pins either way. but laptops dont have inputs

well not really, since a monitor has pins on the connection on its input lead - and the motherboard has a female connector or "holes" - although you can get adapters that swap a female and male pins/holes if its not the case.

I have done this, I just plugged the laptop into my graphics card, but for some reason it was just an extension of my desktop monitors screen (very long)
So It's possible, I know it is.

You should be able to do the above by extending your desktop onto the laptop monitor, then disabling the original monitor. Of course, there's no guarantee it would work on your specific laptop...

no i dont think thats the case.

in most examples i have seen motherboard and monitor conenctions are female and standard VGA cables are male on either ends.

heres a few examples.
