Lanier LD625c Scanning problems

I am looking at scanning in some pictures for a project at work and the place I work for has a Lanier LD625c. Whenever I scan things (its max DPI is 600) it looks very grainy and the pictures come out very contrasty. Example a black and white picture has very bright whites and dark blacks and the pictures look really bad.

Is there a way to fix this?

Are there any diagnostics on the scanner that you can do? What are you using to scan it with (program wise)?
