Hi guys,

My SONY DVD-ROM DDU1615 will play dvds, read disks etc, but it wont boot a windows xp disk when I turn my computer on.

I have definitely set the BIOS to boot from the dvd drive first, but it just makes the usual disk reading noises and sits there. I have tried two different disks, one of them gave an error message. Both disks are in perfect condition and the disk drive firmware is up to date (I still had same problem with original firmware).

The disk will boot fine from my SONY DVD RW DW-Q28A. (I have made sure to set the drives to master or slave accordingly.)

What do you think? Dodgy drive? It seems to work for everything else though.

Does it matter if I use a DVDRW drive as a ROM drive aswell?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, and do you think a BIOS update might help?

*sorry for double post, internet went weird.

Any drives will read ROM CDs. Now, to your boot problems, it could either be one of these:

1-Your DVD-RW's firmware can't handle booting, and that is very unusual.
2-If your drive is very recent, you may need a BIOS flash.
3-If I take assumption of your laptop with an external device, make sure that the Optical drive boot is set to Sony.

You said to boot from CD-ROM, but youi might need to choose which is the booting one, as you got two.
