I've never built a computer before, i want to. I want to be able to play good computer games, Doom3, Half-Life2, etc. But my computer won't. Store Bought Intel Celeron 2.8ghz, 512mb DDR Ram, Ultra Speed CD Re-Writer, DVD 16X viewer, 120gb Ultra DMA Hard Drive, but i have no AGP slots, nor PCI Express, just old PCI slots. Can i keep my hard drive, cd writer, and dvd viewer, but replace my processor and motherboard?

Hi,

Woh quite a new system?...and they haven't even given you a AGP slot?... ouch...

Yes you could just replace you're processor and motherboard, but make sure they are compatible with each other first ;)
I mean to me, the processor doesn't seem too bad (I'm running off a 1.2Ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird and getting 50FPS on HL2 running on a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb card), but it might be worth replacing to play new games when they arrive! You'll also need a good video card too of course to improve capabilities (Direct X-9 if you can)

I also want to build a computer from scratch, so good luck to you, happy building!

Well, wow, 1.2 ghz and 50fps impressive,
Now BigLu I would say you should try to sell your Cpu and Mobo on Ebay, then add in like a few hundred like 400, and if you get like 100 for your cpu and mobo that mabes 500. With that money buy this prossesor ~$200

this mobo ~$100

and this Gpu ~$200

for a grand total of 500 bucks, you will be able to play doom 3 Hl2 and anyother game in the near future i.e. till 2007 . at a nice res.

hehe well...I made my computer sound better by not saying the details... lol

I run it at 640x480, though I can run most settings on High (e.g Shader effects, Models), cannot have any Full Scene Antialising though (sends it right down...)

Yeah sounds really good :)
