I'm considering this build:
Sony NEC Optiarc Optical Drive
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache
EVGA NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Motherboard Can I get something cheaper that will work well with the rest of the setup?
OCZ GameXStream 700W ATX12V Power Supply Is this overpowered for the setup?
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 24-bit 96khz PCI Sound Card
Cooler Master Centurion 5 ATX Mid Tower Case Is this too small for the hardware to be enclosed?
Western Digital Caviar SE 160GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s hdd Will this cause a massive bottleneck?
XFX GeForce 9800GTX XXX 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card
Concerning memory, how much of a leg up is 3GB to 2GB? These RAM specifications match the motherboard, so be wary if you have another suggestion.
If not much... A-DATA 2GB (2x1) 240-Pin SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
If there is a substantial increase in performance... 3x Patriot Extreme Performance 1GB 240-Pin SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

Will this setup work very well?

sound card is not needed imo, also the 780 mobo is a bit more but has more upgrades (not to mention tri sli heh).. I would downgrade to a smaller power supply (unless you plan on having more then one vid card)..

Here is my new rig I purchased for under 900$ (includes vista, does not include video card because I already have a decent one)

If you don't need an OS, that saves some decent money ;P

definitely get the sound card, even a cheap card like the Audigy SE is 10x better than onboard audio, download the hacked drivers and you basically have an X-Fi Xtreme Audio ($60-70) for the price of an Audigy SE ($25-30)...

Audio is important to me... ah... I did indeed forget the OS :p I'd probably get 32-bit Home Premium, which brings
into question as all RAM listed are 4GB, where 32-bit can only support up to 3GB... so can someone answer my question as to the 1GB performance boost? All the video cards listed there are ATI as well.

Thanks for the link... this is 100% risk-free (or around)?

And the setup is smoothly workable, no?

you can install that modded driver like a regular SoundBlaster driver (actually, it looks just like the regular install, you can't really tell the difference), but if sound really is important, get this, it's $30 off until july 31st...

Speaking of having the Audigy SE, I just remembered... my previous computer's power supply blew out... would that disable all the hardware connected? If not, I could use the case (regardless of power failure), DVD drives, Audigy SE, hard drive, and OS license (plus vista upgrade that I have) and save a whole bunch of money, leaving me to purchase the video card, mobo, Power Supply, and RAM.

get a psu and test out everything to see if they work, and yeah, that'd save you tons of $$ if everything worked...
