how many frames per second does a game need to run smoothly? i've heard a lotta things, 20, 25, 30 etc. but i want ure guy's opinion

A movie runs at around 24-25 so shoot for that MINIMUM.
I would say 40 is what you want to get.
Anything about that doesn't really make a difference.
 
30fps and above is usually considered the mark were games go from crap to very playable, anything above 60fps usually wont matter due to your monitors refresh rate.

25fps and below is kinda unbearable to play, 25-30 is OK, but 30 is the holy grail


if ur comp can run crysis on max settings in dx10 at your monitors native resolution, and its above 30fps, ur doing amazing stuff.
 
well the system i'm getting has two 4890's that i'm going to be overclocking so i'm guessing that will give me 30+ fps on crysis?

also one more question, is getting say, (just an example, not planning on doing this) 4 4890's but having each run at pcie x8 worth it over getting only two of them?
