Fixing Microphone

My mic doesnt work.
i did the folloing,it didnt work, what else can i try ?

in VIsta:
Control panel-->hardware/sounds-->sounds-->microphone-->levels turned all the way up.

This may sound stupid, but is the mic plugged into the mic jack? It's pretty easy to sometimes overlook that stuff or plug it into the wrong place. I've done it plenty of times and couldn't figure out the problem for awhile. If the mic needs a power source, batteries or AC, is it plugged into the mic, and turned on? Is the mic new or old (if old the wires might be broken internally)?
