I've never built a computer before, but I'm starting school in the Fall and need a more powerful/reliable machine for everyday use. I've scoured the internet for reliable building advice, and am thinking of using Arstechnica's "ultimate budget box" (I'm on a very tight budget) guidelines.
Here are the specs I'm working with. This particular configuration was put together in May, so better products are probably out there. I'm hesitant to substitute out individual pieces, though, as I don't want to buy something that isn't compatible with something else.
Asus M2A-VM mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Retail
1GB DDR2-667
Samsung Spinpoint 160GB
DVD-RW/CD-RW: Lite-On LH-20A1S
In-Win Z589T
Plus whatever CRT monitor I can find on craigslist.
Veteran computer builders, does this look like a good setup to you? Any other advice? Thanks.
