im getting an error on startup as it seems my computer didnt close down properly due to a powercut

its returning an error in a hive file in windows/system32/config/SOFTWARE

now i cant afford to loose whats on my harddrive by formatting it and installing again so i need other solutions

ive tried using my XP disk and the recovery console and i cant get into the directory but thats realy all i can do without knowing how to move files over from the disk to the directory

i was thinking maybe a copy of dos on a disk or linux which doesnt recuire install so i can have a better look around it?

try putting the drive in another machine as a slave .... or put another drive in the existing machine to boot off.

you idea of a noninstall linux is wht i was thinking as well ... get one with a gui and bruning software ... make sure its a "boot disk"

I got an error like that before to. I reset the cmos and then everything was fine. Im not sure why that fixed it but it did. Maybe you should try that.
