EA patch file not opening.

I was wondering if anyone else has a problem when trying to open a file or program it where it would look like it would be opening but then it does nothing? This has only happened a few times with me and its mostly with EA game files. For instance I needed to patch Battlefield 2142 and the file wouldn't open after I downloaded it. It took restarting and redownloading to finally get it to work. Any one know what might cause this sort of thing?

I have an ASUS F3SV-X1 laptop
System specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2.0GHz
2 Gb DDR2 667 MHz
160 Gb 5.4k RPM SATA
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS 256 Mb dedicated graphics card
Windows XP Pro

Crappy EA coding, they're well known for it, the BF2 series was a nightmare to patch, nearly every patch had a high failure rate when trying to install, I ended up doing most of them in safe mode, luckily the later releases (accumulative patches) seem to work ok these days.
