I just spent an hour and a half disassembling my iBook because the DVD drive wasn't working. I finally got it open, saw that the cable had come undone, replugged it, then tested it out. It worked. So then, I put the whole thing back together again, booted it up, and the first thing is does is shoot the DVD out. When I tried to put it back in, there is a metal bar blocking me. I booted into open firmware and ran the eject CD command. Still no luck.
Why do these drives keep breaking on me? I've owned this computer for two years, and in that time I've had three of them die on me. I'm sure the drives are actually dead because they didn't work in another iBook. It's getting really frustrating at this point.
